on the road again...

this time, destination yangoon....

welcome to the land where the big brother watches you. unless you have gmail (maybe they haven't discovered that yet), you can forget sending e-mails from myanmar. i can't even access my company's remote e-mail. oh, no mobile phone roaming service too.

and the city is without motorcycles (the authority bans them except for officials),

the goldsmith...

in the shady corner just outside the central market, there are a few goldsmiths who serve endless number of customers either the jewellers or the public who wanted to clean their jewellery, custom made their jewellery or melt their gold.

lots of chemicals are used to clean the jewellery. safety and health are not priority with a simple surgeon mask is deemed sufficient to protect the worker from the harm of these chemicals.

this goldsmith has been in the trade for more than 30 years.

he inherited the skills from his father

and now he is passing the knowledge to his son

it's a natural process for this family-owned business

at the central market...

when in phnom penh, the central market is a must-go place. without a doubt

the market is popular with its jewellery, made of gem stones especially ruby, jade and sapphire. cambodia is rich with these gems.

besides selling, you can also sell your gems to these jewellers who will check thoroughly the quality of the stones.

there are many imitations around, so strict inspection is a must. you can see many young people man the stores - most of them inherited from their parents who started the business like 20-30 years ago.

they also design the jewellery, painstakingly select and arrange the tiny stones before sending them to the goldsmith to produce gold bracelets or necklaces with the stones

these bracelets or necklaces can sell average between USD100 to USD5,000

meet my tuktuk driver...

meet my tuktuk driver...phan...

his english is not bad...must have learned from tourists. very persistent guy, i must say. he followed me walking for nearly 10 minutes before i finally decided to use his service for a round of phnom penh city centre.

competition is fierce, he said. there are a lot of tuktuks in town and everyone is fighting for customers. average income is USD15 a day (that's around RM40) and that barely enough to cover his operational costs, especially when petrol sells almost USD1.50 a litre. it's so bad that he even charged me USD1 to have his pictures taken....dem....but it's worth it.

riding on a tuktuk often makes my heart skips a few beats. they can beat our mat rempits anytime. from the pic, you can see how phan just rode against the traffic...adoi
